Facelift

A more youthful appearance will be restored with removal of sagging, aging skin. Expect a couple weeks of downtime.

For many younger people, keeping healthy skin typically requires less effort. A good skin care regimen with medical-grade products and non-invasive treatments can be effective for maintaining the skin’s appearance. However, as we age, these less invasive options may no longer be sufficient to achieve the desired youthful look. When this happens, a cosmetic facelift procedure might be the best solution.

What is a Facelift?

A facelift, also known as rhytidectomy, is a cosmetic surgical procedure designed to create a more youthful appearance in the face. The surgery aims to reduce the visible signs of aging by tightening sagging skin, smoothing deep folds, and lifting and firming the facial tissues. It can address various issues, such as loose skin, jowls, and deep wrinkles, to restore a more refreshed and youthful look.

Benefits of a Facelift:

  1. Tightens Sagging Skin: Removes excess skin and tightens underlying tissues, giving the face a firmer, more youthful appearance.

  2. Reduces Deep Creases: Smooths out deep lines and wrinkles, particularly around the nose and mouth.

  3. Restores Facial Contours: Improves the appearance of jowls and enhances the jawline and neck.

  4. Long-Lasting Results: Provides more dramatic and long-lasting results compared to non-surgical treatments.

  5. Boosts Confidence: Enhances overall facial harmony and rejuvenation, improving self-esteem and confidence.

Types of Facelifts:

  1. Traditional Facelift: Targets the mid-face, lower face, and neck. Involves incisions around the ears and sometimes under the chin.

  2. Mini Facelift: A less invasive option that addresses minor sagging around the cheeks, jawline, and neck with shorter incisions.

  3. Mid-Facelift: Focuses on the middle portion of the face, particularly the cheeks and the area below the eyes.

  4. Lower Facelift: Concentrates on the lower third of the face, including the jawline and neck.

What causes sagging facial skin?

There is no single cause of sagging facial skin, but it is something that all of us will experience as we age. The older we get, the less collagen and elastin we produce, so as they break down, the skin becomes lax. Exposure to UV rays speeds up damage to the skin cells, including collagen and elastin. Then of course, there are other things like diet, hydration, and genetics that all play a role.

Your Facelift options

At Stubbs Center, we also offer a wide range of surgical facial procedures including full facelifts, mini facelifts, brow lifts, and eyelid lifts. Incisions from these types of procedures tend to heal very well and are often not noticeable after just 6 months to a year.

Because we also provide less invasive procedures and treatment options at Stubbs Center, we typically encourage patients to consider using both in conjunction for optimal, lasting results.

Who should consider getting a Facelift?

If you are in good health, have realistic expectations and have lax skin you want to address, a facelift could be a good option for you! A facelift can be a powerful tool for rejuvenation, helping you feel more confident and revitalized.

The Facelift Procedure:

  1. Consultation: Discuss your goals, medical history, and expectations with Dr. Stubbs. Determine the best type of facelift for your needs.

  2. Anesthesia: General anesthesia or intravenous sedation is typically used for the procedure.

  3. Incisions: Incisions are made along the hairline, around the ears, and sometimes under the chin, depending on the type of facelift.

  4. Tightening and Lifting: The underlying tissues and muscles are tightened, excess skin is removed, and the remaining skin is re-draped over the newly positioned contours.

  5. Closure: Incisions are closed with sutures or skin adhesives. Dr. Stubbs may also place drains to prevent fluid buildup.

Recovery:

  • Initial Downtime: Plan for about two to three weeks of downtime. Swelling and bruising are common initially.

  • Pain Management: Pain and discomfort can be managed with prescribed medications.

  • Follow-up Appointments: Attend all follow-up appointments with Stubbs Center to monitor healing and address any concerns.

  • Full Recovery: Complete recovery can take several months, with final results becoming more apparent as swelling subsides and tissues settle.

Post-Surgery Care Tips:

  • Rest: Get plenty of rest and avoid any heavy lifting or strenuous activities.

  • Hydration and Nutrition: Stay hydrated and maintain a healthy diet to promote healing.

  • Wound Care: Follow Dr. Stubbs instructions for wound care to prevent infection.

  • Gradual Return to Activity: Gradually return to normal activities as recommended by your surgeon.

  • Head Elevation: Keep your head elevated to reduce swelling.

  • Cold Compresses: Use cold compresses to minimize swelling and bruising.

Potential Risks and Complications:

  • Infection

  • Scarring

  • Changes in skin sensation

  • Hematoma (blood accumulation under the skin)

  • Adverse reactions to anesthesia

  • Nerve injury leading to temporary or permanent facial muscle weakness
