What is Blepharoplasty?
Blepharoplasty is a surgical procedure that improves the appearance of the eyelids. It can be performed on the upper eyelids, lower eyelids, or both. This procedure can correct issues such as sagging skin that creates folds or disturbs the natural contour of the upper eyelid, excess fatty deposits that appear as puffiness in the eyelids, and bags under the eyes.
Benefits of Blepharoplasty:
Rejuvenates the Eyes: Restores a youthful and refreshed appearance by removing excess skin and fat.
Improves Vision: Eliminates drooping upper eyelids that can obstruct vision.
Reduces Puffiness: Minimizes bags and puffiness under the eyes.
Enhances Facial Aesthetics: Creates a more alert and rested look, enhancing overall facial harmony.
Boosts Confidence: Improves self-esteem by rejuvenating the eyes and providing a more youthful appearance.
Who is a good candidate for Eyelid Surgery?
Ideal patients should first and foremost be in good health and have realistic expectations for their surgery. Were you born with “hooded” eyelids, or developed them with age? Those with droopy eyelids that either cause too much of the whites of their eyes to show or who have skin restricting their vision are excellent candidates. However, anyone who dislikes the shape of their eyes or the lines, wrinkles and puffiness around them could benefit from the procedure!
Will insurance cover Eyelid Surgery?
A blepharoplasty can be performed for both aesthetic and functional improvement. At times, the skin around the eye may begin to droop and obscure vision. At that time, it is possible insurance may cover the procedure with proper documentation.
Common Reasons for Considering Blepharoplasty:
Sagging Upper Eyelids: Corrects drooping eyelids that may impair vision or create a tired appearance.
Excess Skin: Removes excess skin that creates folds or disturbs the natural contour of the eyelid.
Puffiness: Reduces puffiness and bags under the eyes caused by excess fatty deposits.
Wrinkles and Fine Lines: Smooths out wrinkles and fine lines around the eyes for a more youthful look.
The Blepharoplasty Procedure:
Consultation: Discuss your goals, medical history, and expectations with Dr. Stubbs. This initial consultation will help determine the best approach to your blepharoplasty.
Anesthesia: Local anesthesia with sedation or general anesthesia is typically used to ensure comfort during the procedure.
Incisions: For upper eyelid surgery, incisions are made within the natural creases of the eyelids. For lower eyelid surgery, incisions are made just below the lash line or inside the lower eyelid.
Removing and Repositioning Tissue: Dr. Stubbs removes or repositions excess skin, fat, and muscle to achieve a smoother, more youthful appearance.
Closing the Incisions: Once the desired corrections are made, the incisions are closed with sutures. These sutures are typically removed within a week of surgery.
Recovery:
Initial Downtime: Plan for about one to two weeks of downtime. Swelling and bruising are common initially.
Pain Management: Pain and discomfort can be managed with prescribed medications. However most patients find over the counter medications are sufficient.
Follow-up Appointments: Attend all follow-up appointments at Stubbs Center to monitor healing and ensure proper recovery.
Full Recovery: Swelling and bruising will gradually subside, with final results becoming more apparent over several months.
